Genealogy series

Text / Li Jia

Since ancient times, utensils have been an indispensable item in human daily life. From the beginning of human civilization, it has evolved along with the progress of history. From a certain point of view, it is not only a daily necessities, but also a cultural symbol. The imprint of each dynasty on the utensils has its distinctive historical features. The wares of the previous generations used in the Genealogy series reflect the differences and inheritances of different historical periods, from the primitive tribes to the bronzes of the Shang Dynasty, from the lacquerware of the Sui and Tang Dynasties to the enamel of the Song Dynasty, from blue and white to purple sand. They are connected side by side, and the blood is inherited. From this point of view, the meaning of the Genealogy series is: first of all, it is a collection of historical and cultural symbols of different periods, and then these different historical and cultural symbols are combined into a whole historical and cultural symbol. Inheritance and integration.

Due to its stainless steel texture and its large-scale volume, the Genealogy series presents a harmonious form of beauty in its echoes with the surrounding landscape, while at the same time it is full of opposition and strong tension in this harmonious form. First, it uses stainless steel, a modern material, instead of pottery, copper or porcelain to make ancient wares, transforming the “static texture” of ancient Chinese porcelain into “dynamic texture”, with mirrored stainless steel mapping to the light and rhythm of people. Incorporating the distorted modern expression into ancient vessels, creating an interesting exchange and interaction between ancient and modern, and a new interpretation of the “texture beauty” of traditional porcelain, through the confrontation between texture and form to complete the dialogue between contemporary and history . Second, it is not only just a work of art. It is also through this mirror response that it turns itself into a medium that carries the contextual chain. When the surrounding scenery and flowing figures are against it, the viewer captures and examines the current symbol of historical and cultural heritage, and integrates reality into this historical chain to complete the inheritance of culture. The combination of static and dynamic, time and space, and the transformation of history and contemporary, let us reflect the context of history and culture from a contemporary perspective. Absorption and growth in the description, continued in the inheritance, this is the meaning of Genealogy series.

Wang Kaifang, from the Power of Discourse series to the recent Genealogy series, from the transformation and reconciliation of daily experience to the integration and derivation of the entire historical context, its conceptual significance is beyond the times.
